The yellow jessamine was an early favorite of South Carolinians. The Dixie Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy chose it as their floral emblem in 1907. In 1923, the state government discussed adopting a state flower and a committee was formed.
It was discovered that the yellow jessamine had gained in popularity. The committee reported that the yellow jessamine would be a good candidate because it is widespread in South Carolina. The committee further noted, Its fragrance greets us first in the woodland and its delicate flower suggests the pureness of gold. No other candidates were even suggested. The yellow jessamine was adopted as South Carolina’s state flower on February 1, 1924.
